Volume = length × width × height

Measure all three in the same unit, multiply them together, and convert to litres (1 cubic metre = 1,000 litres; 1 cubic foot ≈ 28.3 litres).

A commonly used raised bed size is 4 feet by 8 feet, filled to about 1 foot deep:

  • 4 ft = 1.22 m, 8 ft = 2.44 m, 1 ft = 0.30 m
  • Volume = 1.22 × 2.44 × 0.30 ≈ 0.89 m³ ≈ 890 litres

That's a substantial volume — most gardeners don't fill a bed this size with pure potting mix alone. A common approach is a blend: garden soil or a bulk growing medium as the base, topped up with a lighter potting mix and compost in the top few inches where seedlings actually root.
